CoffeeDrums: a drum machine in your browser
CoffeeDrums is a drum machine that runs right in your browser. Program beats on a 16-step grid with the sounds of a Roland TR-808 or with your own WAV samples. There is nothing to install and you don't need an account.
Rebuild patterns you know, try out new grooves, or play the drums live on your keyboard. Save your songs as files and load them again later.
How to program your first beat
- In the Kick row, click steps 1, 5, 9 and 13: that's a straight four-on-the-floor.
- Put the snare or the clap on steps 5 and 13, so the backbeat lands on two and four.
- Fill the closed hi-hat on every other step, or on all 16 for more drive.
- Press Space to play and set the tempo in BPM. Swing gives the 16th notes a looser groove.
- Right-click a step to change its velocity or to play it 2 to 4 times within the step, for quick hi-hat rolls.
- Save the song with File › Save song so you can pick it up later.
What CoffeeDrums can do
- TR-808 kit and your own samples
- Ten sounds of a Roland TR-808, from kick and snare to cowbell and toms. In the drum kit you swap any sound for a WAV file of your own, which stays in your browser.
- Eight registers
- Each register is a 16-step pattern. After the last step playback moves on to the next register with notes, so you can build verse, fill and chorus. Lock loops the current register.
- Finger drums and recording
- Play the kit with Q W E R T and A S D F G. Record writes each hit to the nearest 16th step of the playing register.
- Effects
- Low pass and high pass filters, compression, reverb (Room, Plate, Hall, Cathedral, Spring) and a tempo-synced delay from 1/2 to 1/64, straight, dotted or triplet, in mono or ping-pong.
- Swing
- Delays every second 16th note, from straight to a heavy shuffle.
- Songs as files
- All registers, tempo, mixer and effects go into a JSON file, with your own samples if you like.
Questions and answers
Do I need an account for CoffeeDrums?
No. The drum machine runs in your browser without a login. An account is optional.
What does CoffeeDrums cost?
You can use CoffeeDrums without paying. If you like it, you can buy me a coffee.
What does a TR-808 sound like?
The Roland TR-808 is an analog drum machine from 1980. Its deep, long-decaying kick, its clap and its cowbell still shape hip-hop, trap, electro and house. CoffeeDrums uses samples of a real TR-808 from the hyperreal.org TR-808 archive.
Can I use my own drum samples?
Yes. In Drumkit › Edit drumkit you replace any sound with a WAV file. The files stay in your browser and are not uploaded.
Where are my songs stored?
In a file on your device: File › Save song writes it, File › Load song reads it back. Your browser also keeps the song you worked on last.
Which keyboard shortcuts are there?
Space plays and stops, L toggles Lock, 1 to 8 pick a register, Ctrl+S saves and Ctrl+O loads a song (⌘ on a Mac).
